As an experienced traveller I have made some bad accommodation choices over the years. Recently, I had the opportunity to go to Sydney, Australia and friends told me that instead of booking a hotel, I should book a fully furnished apartment. I had no idea what they were talking about; how can one just book a fully furnished apartment? Wouldn’t that be like renting an apartment? Wouldn’t there be some sort of long-term lease agreement? I was only going to be in Sydney for three weeks, which isn’t even a whole month. They explained to me exactly how fully furnished apartments work, and told me where I could find them online. I was intrigued.
Suddenly, a whole new travelling experience opened up to me. I was going to book my first short stay apartment in Sydney with a company named Furnished Properties Pty Ltd. I was of course, more than a bit apprehensive at first; what were these apartments going to be like? Sure, they looked fantastic in the pictures on the internet, but what if they were quite the opposite in reality? Every scenario I could possibly imagine clouded my mind and threatened to extinguish any sort of possibility of me having a wonderful holiday in Sydney in these luxurious apartments.
In fact, I was almost going to cancel my booking, but my friends reassured me and even showed me pictures they themselves had taken of the apartments they stayed in. One of the apartments actually looked remarkably similar to the one I had just booked: A one bedroom apartment by the beach. Perfect and what an experience ……….. a wonderful, make you feel at home vibe.
I was flying to Sydney from London. Though the flight is a long one, visiting Sydney is well worth it. I had been to Perth in Western Australia before with some friends, but for some reason I’d never ventured over to the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. Now, I was finally going and I wasn’t going to be staying in a hostel, I was going to be staying in a fully furnished apartment like a real Sydneysider.
When I arrived at the apartment I was completely knocked out; it was exactly like what I’d seen on the internet. I walked in the door and everything was exactly as it had been described on the internet. In fact, everything was so perfect that for a split second it felt like I had just walked into someone else’s home, but the place was so comfortable, I was instantly put at ease knowing it was going to be mine for three whole weeks.
The kitchen was clean and had all the comforts of home including a fridge, toaster, and microwave. The living area was modern and had a flat screen television and an amazing view of Bondi Beach. The bedroom was spacious with a large, comfy bed and several windows offering amazing views of the area. The apartment had everything. In fact, just about the only thing it didn’t come with was a few beers already in the fridge, but I’ll let that one go for now. There is absolutely nothing like returning to the peace and quiet of your own place after site-seeing or a day at the beach.
If I have any regret about the whole experience, it’s that I believe I’m well and truly spoilt now from ever staying in a hostel or hotel again! But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
